Max and Billy are able to spend all of their time together, planning and preparing to win the Most Patriotic award in the Fourth of July parade. Max and Billy can’t win the prize on their own, so they must enlist the help of Billy’s dog, Waldo and the other dogs on the block, Hera and Annie. They even may have to strike a deal with Max’s older sister, Maggie, for her help.

No matter what problems seem to be in front of Max, he tries to overcome them all and remain focused on the parade. Max T. Booker is a wonderful children’s chapter book prompting the reader to use their imaginations. Max is a the main character that has a true gift, (I won’t spoil it!,) and attempts to go through his normal summer break. The reader is put into Max’s world. We read about Max, his family, friends, best dog and how he hopes to win his town’s summer parade. My twins were unable to put the book down after I started reading it to them. Some of the words were not in their ability, but we went to the dictionary to learn what they meant. I will be sharing this with my class. I hope there is a Max sequel in planning. The author has a true gift in communicating with children.

My kids loved reading about Max and his pals. The author was able to bring Max and his relationship with Dash, Billy, Annie, Hera, and Waldo off the page and into real life. We felt as though Max was alive and a real person. There are life lessons all throughout the book, subtly placed. Every night they were allowed to read the book, my kids asked if they could stay awake later, just to read. Both kids have read it more than once. My son has decided to do his book report on Max. The story has numerous plot twists and turns, that kept us all on the edge of our seats. This book is a throw back. It does not seem like there is a second book or that this book is a series. My kids were a little disappointed by this. Hopefully one day, Max will be back.

  3. Mary

What a fabulous book for children to read. As I was reading the book with my daughter, we both noticed that there was no technology in it. Finally!, something that is able to keep her attention that does not have a screen or promote having a screen. She immediately was drawn in by Max and his story. Max is relatable. My daughter commented that she would like to be friends with Max. She wished that she had Max’s “super-secret.” Throughout the book I was able to see the social lessons that were addressed. The author has a talent for telling a story in a way that allows the reader(s) to be drawn into all the happenings in Carmenville. There were some words that required going to the dictionary, but that is how we learn. A wonderful book to read with your children or allow them to read on their own. Max, you have at least two more fans. We will patiently wait for the next book in what I hope is a long series of Max, Dash, and the rest of the cast of characters!
